Despite safety concerns and even some negativity surrounding the opening of East Allen Township’s day camp, the event was a rousing success.
“We had a great time and had the kids outdoors, where they could exercise,” said Chuck Frantz, the township’s recreation director.
The camp ran from June 29 to Aug. 6.
Frantz and his staff went to great lengths to keep the areas lively and active while maintaining safety measures.
“Every morning, we asked the parents when they were dropped off if they had any contact with anyone who picked up COVID-19. We were on top of each camper’s health situation,” he said. “Everyone bonded so well together.”
The regular size of the group was cut in half from the normal 150 to 75 campers. According to Frantz, it not only gave the campers more one-on-one attention but kept the groups at a small, more manageable size.
“It was great for the kids to be out in the fresh air. They have been cooped up since March. This camp was a welcomed relief,” said Rachel Fackenthall, who was the in-charge counselor during the program.
On one of the last days of the camp, a few campers - some with help from mom - made carnival games. Each was a hit and a fun way to end the summer tradition.
