Falcons sweep Lehigh Valley Cardinals

The Salisbury Falcons adult baseball team doubled its season win total in one day, sweeping a doubleheader against the Lehigh Valley Cardinals on Sunday, July 26, in Lehigh Valley Baseball League action at Egypt Memorial Park. The scores of the two games were 8-3 and 9-8.

The Falcons improved to 4-0 with the wins.

“I think we expected to have the kind of start that we are having at the beginning of the year,” shortstop Brandon Black said. “We have a deep and talented team with great pitching and a dangerous lineup from top-to-bottom.”

Black, who is one of the elder statesmen on the team in his 30s, has not played competitive baseball since his days at Salisbury High School.

“I haven’t played baseball in quite a while,” said Black. “It was definitely an adjustment at first, getting back into the rhythm of the game and all that comes with it. I feel great and am just trying to do what I can to help the team win games.”

Black had a day to remember. He finished the twin bill 5-for-6 with five RBIs and a run scored. Black helped pace his team that combined for 18 hits in the two games, bringing home 17 runs.

“I would definitely say that we feed off each other and are always there to pick one another up no matter what,” said Black. “It’s just a great group of guys to play with and be around. They love playing baseball and winning games, but are also great teammates.”

In both games Salisbury went ahead early.

In the opener, the Falcons scored two runs in both the second and third innings, and never looked back for the opening victory. In the nightcap, the Falcons needed every run they scored, tallying four in the first and five in the second, as the two teams scored all of their runs in that two-inning frame.

“You always want to jump out first and set the tone of the game,” Black said. “We have great pitchers and knew that whoever was pitching would settle in and control the game. We just had to help them as best that we could as a lineup and, in the field, and we did just that.”

Salisbury is unbeaten and finding success in each facet of the game, in pitching, hitting and fielding.

“We definitely have our eyes and minds set on winning and going as far as we can go,” said Black. “For me, personally, it’s about getting back into playing the game that I love and doing whatever I can to help us win. At the same time though, I want to have fun doing what I love to do with a great group of guys.”

Pitchers Gabe Mosser and Justin Aungst earned the victories in games one and two, respectively. Evan Kulig pitched a scoreless inning in the opener. Kulig, Aungst, Joey Gallantini and Brad Vangeli all recorded multi-hit days.

After a week off last weekend, Salisbury is back out on the diamond this Sunday for two games against the Macungie Grizzlies.
