Board discusses Quarry St. sidewalks

Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners connected via Webex Aug. 3 for its monthly workshop meeting. The agenda was small compared to prior meetings, but it still created a lengthy conversation.

Many of the issues up for discussion were concerning sidewalk or curbing installation, including one focused on Quarry Street.

The request called for a deferral of a sidewalk and curbing installation along the Quarry Street frontage at 3434 N. Front St. It was proposed the sidewalk would actually be more hazardous than beneficial as the sidewalk would empty into a parking lot.

Commissioner Thomas Slonaker questioned how the deferral of a sidewalk was safer than the addition of one, as pedestrians would just be walking in a bed of grass otherwise. His point was met with agreement.

A new request proposing the expansion of Quarry Street with several new road additions was introduced. More details will follow when the sidewalk issue is settled.

Commissioners also discussed adding a 75-foot no-parking zone along East Columbia and Center streets in relation to the crosswalk.

Commissioner Charles Fisher was concerned this would cause issues with unwarranted parking in front of the residential homes along this street. Board Engineer Frank Clark spoke about the paperwork the residents can file through Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to avoid this issue.

The last issue of the meeting discussed the deferral of a sidewalk along the Joab Road frontage at 3645 and 3655 Municipal Drive.

Instead of a sidewalk, Rob Piligian, project engineer, discussed the removal of 3645 Municipal Drive as a separate property, which would then be allocated as a new parking lot for Advanced and Comfort Dentistry, 3655 Municipal Drive. With the addition of this parking lot, the residential parking in the neighborhood should clear up significantly, it was reported.

The meeting concluded with a final motion appointing Jonathan Bolton as a member of the township planning commission. Originally an alternate, Bolton will now fill a vacancy left by James Molinaro.

The board of commissioners will next meet virtually 7 p.m. Aug. 10. To attend the meeting, follow the instructions at whitehalltownship.org.
