Macungie Memorial Park, a 42-acre privately operated park in the borough of Macungie, is growing.
Scott Horner, vice president of Colliers International, recently assisted community member Joe Devine in the transfer of a 1.6 acre parcel at 135 Main St., between Lumber Street and Mountain Creek, which will become an addition to the western side of the park.
In a media release from the Macungie Memorial Park Board of Directors the acquisition was described as “very exciting.
“The purchase was made possible by a local family who provided a two-year interest free loan for the purchase price and closing costs,” the media release continues.
Park features include tree-shaded lawn, a swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, a gymnasium and ball fields, banquet and meeting rooms and picnic pavilions and a band shell.
Events traditionally held in the park include the Wheels of Time and Das Awschkt Fescht car shows, the semiannual Lower Lehigh Lions’ Flea Market and Garage Sale and weekly bingo games.
Park officials welcome community input concerning use of the new area. Park meetings are held the last Tuesday of each month in the basement of the main park building.
Park officials also are looking for grants, donations and funding suggestions to pay the temporary loan.
Macungie Memorial Park is a 501(C)(3) charity and donations to the park are tax exempt.
A special land acquisition fund may be created, according to the media release from the Macungie Memorial Park Board of Directors.
Scott Horner, vice president of commercial real estate firm Colliers International, guided the acquisition of a 1.6 acre parcel of land expanding Macungie Memorial Park.
