Respectfully Yours: Baby shower needs to be online or drive-by

Dear Jacquelyn,

I am in the process of planning a baby shower for my daughter. What are some ways to organize and celebrate a baby shower during social distancing?

Dear Reader,

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic shutdown has led to the cancellation and postponement of countless events, from weddings to baby showers.

For expectant parents, the idea of having a traditional baby shower is pretty much off the table right now.

There is good news: Just because you can’t gather in person doesn’t mean you can’t throw a memorable heartwarming baby shower. You have options, but you need to get creative.

Some families are moving their showers online and others are trying out drive-by parades. Both offer a level of closeness that allows family and friends to participate while protecting everyone’s health, especially the mom-to-be.

As with any special event, a baby shower requires lots of preplanning.

Proper invitations should be sent. Be sure to mention on the invitation where she’s registered. Be sure to order plenty of decorations. You can mail a pretty backdrop to the expectant mother to decorate the wall behind her while she open gifts. Decorations are an easy way to make the day festive for those that are watching online.

If you decide to have a drive by shower, decorate cars with posters and balloons for extra fun. As with a traditional baby shower, gifts are always welcome. Loved ones can mail gifts ahead of time for the new mother to open during a virtual party.

Families are prioritizing health and safety, but that doesn’t mean parents-to-be can’t have memorable baby showers.

Celebrations will continue to look quite a bit different for a while, but there is a silver lining. We are becoming very creative and developing new ways of celebrating life’s special moments.

Respectfully Yours,

Jacquelyn
