MACUNGIE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Emmaus Public Library gave its monthly report during the July 20 Macungie Borough Council meeting.

With the library just recently reopened due to COVID-19, services were still being provided to the community while the building was closed. Books, magazines, newspapers and even jigsaw puzzles are offered online. With limitations still in place, summer online reading programs are available. Library usage is fairly high in the community. There are 1,300 active card holders.

With a grant, the library will offer art workshops which is a new service for the library.

Macungie Borough Council member Roseann Schleicher said the library should receive their monthly payment as they continued to provide services. This payment will be made; further payments will be reviewed.

A reminder was given to residents about fireworks. They need to be 150 feet away from any structure whether inhabited or not. There was a lot of activity involving police over the usage of fireworks over the last couple of weeks.

Sgt. Travis Kocher gave his monthly report. Kocher raised the need for more officers and noted the borough is having trouble finding eligible candidates.

There was a fire in a shed over the weekend. Schleicher complimented the fire department and the various firefighters from different companies for containing the fire to only one building.

In other business, it was noted the new assistant treasurer is working out very well. There may be a need to reconsider what will happen when Rosemarie Nonnemacher leaves.

The Hartman sidewalk should be completed by the end of August.

Church Street has had some water issues due to the construction of the Americans With Disabilities Act ramps. There were several residents who have had water enter their houses due to the deep holes. The borough has assisted in dealing with this until the ramps are completed.

It was mentioned Stone Hill Meadows is having trouble controlling stormwater. During heavy rain, water is allegedly running off the Stone Hill property onto Allen Organ’s property and making a mess. This situation will be investigated.

The borough’s website issues are being re-evaluated. Various companies have reached out with bids for methods to resolve the borough’s computer problems. Council President John Yerman said services offered are not what is needed. He will write up what needs to be done and make new requests for bids for what is actually needed.

Schleicher made a request for Norm Havlish to be honored on a plaque kept at Macungie Institute. Havlish died recently and had resided in Macungie. He was on council from Jan. 23, 1989 to September 1995. He was also involved in numerous events and also coached basketball and soccer. The plaque lists various former council members who also gave their time to various borough events.
