Lynn board discusses additional Ross Valley Bridge repair estimates

All three Lynn township supervisors were present for the monthly board meeting, which was held in-person on July 9 at the township municipal building.

A brief executive session was held to discuss personnel matters.

Regarding work on the Ross Valley Bridge, it was reported the beams had been sandblasted and painted, and new decking had been laid.

Chairman Justin Smith said a letter had been received from Ryan Christman from Keystone Engineering regarding some issues with the bridge - an estimated need for an additional 8 tons of deck binder for $880, additional approach guide rail for $2,680, 10 feet of mill and overlay for $1,600 and additional deck edge for $690, for a total additional cost of $5,850 on top of the initial estimate of $159,256.

The board discussed the estimated increases.

Supervisor Steve Feinour asked why the increased material requests were not included in the initial contract and if the engineers had not fully assessed or inspected the bridge.

Vice Chairman Brian Dietrich noted the additional estimates were small compared with the overall cost of the project, and Smith said he would be fine with the $2,680 guide rail cost, but would want to look into the additional requests and costs.

Noll said he would investigate the cost estimates and bring the information back before the board.

Supervisors also received the monthly fire reports.

Lynnport Fire Company Assistant Chief Tim VanBlargan reported that as of June, volunteer firefighters responded to 33 emergency calls.

He also noted that the building’s roof project should be completed within a couple of weeks, and all scheduled events have been canceled until November.

VanBlargan said the company had purchased a 2006 Ford F550 4x4 brush truck from Virginville Fire Company to replace the existing 1979 truck.

He added it will be used as a brush and fire police unit and should be in service within two to three weeks after delivery and painting is completed.

New Tripoli Fire Company Assistant Chief Gary Kuntz reported firefighters responded to 78 calls as of July 7. He said all training classes have been on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic but said programs have been slowly coming back online with Zoom classes and some practical, on-site training.

Kuntz reported three firefighters are enrolled in a Mod II program that started July 14 and was hosted by the Emerald Fire Department. He also noted the station’s fundraising had been modified due to the pandemic.

Kuntz said the 2020 Guns and Cash Bash was canceled but drawing-only tickets are for sale and there will be a live Facebook drawing on Sept. 14.

He also said the station recently had a hoagie sale, community yard sale as well as a drive-through Father’s Day chicken barbecue which were successful. Kuntz said the station will have another chicken barbecue 4-7 p.m. July 24.

Also, on Sept. 12 the fire company will have a yard sale with food trucks at the station.

Regarding Ontelaunee Park, the board approved the addition of an addendum to the park’s rental package requiring people renting the facilities to confirm their understanding of the inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19.

Supervisors also noted a recent community-organized yard sale was successful and if it continues as an annual event, the township may not have a need to hold a yard sale in the park.
