The Lower Macungie Board of Commissioners met at the township building June 18 with online attendance still available.
A conditional use hearing was held for the approval of Shepherd’s Corner. This plan for a strip mall with a drive-thru credit union, two small restaurants and three other spots was approved. The location of this development is 5573, 5591 and 5621 Hamilton Blvd. It also borders Krocks Court and Quince Road, a private road parallel to Hamilton Boulevard.
Possible restaurant tenants include an upscale sandwich shop and a dessert shop.
Neighboring residents expressed some concerns with the development. Water usage as well as stormwater runoff were discussed. The area uses well water.
Quince Road is a private road. Motorists occasionally drive down the road only to realize there is a dead end and then turn around using a resident’s driveway to do so. One resident does not want Quince Road to be made public. Another does due to people turning around in his driveway.
The area has been well maintained. Residents have spent over $10,000 for legal fees and upkeep of the area, according to meeting discussion. New Street is another small private road in the area and is allegedly full of potholes and water runoff.
The plan was approved with further discussion over these concerns.
In other meeting news, another plan was considered for the Spring Creek and Trexlertown Road area. The lot is located at 7785 Spring Creek Road. The plan includes a two building storefront with a three story self-storage area. There is an existing farmhouse in this area and it will not be removed. The usage of this building will be discussed at a later date.
An ordinance was amended to require lateral sewer inspections during building inspections. These inspections will be done by video. This change was approved.
In other business, Lower Macungie Township Manager Bruce Beitel said all recyclables must be in the toter and not placed on the sidewalk. Also, there is a possible lengthy wait for electronic recycling due to the well-received addition to the township’s recycling program.
The commissioners will not meet July 2 in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.
