STUDENT PROFILE - Astrid Ortega, Lehigh Valley Academy- Coordinated by Julie Swan
Grade: Graduated
Family members: Mother: Jenny Rosales; siblings: Ashley Ortega (sister), Ashton Marmol (brother)
Favorite subject: My favorite subjects would be my Medical Interventions course and math. I have always been interested in the medical field and taking Medical Interventions has helped my interest grow. Although math may be stressful and confusing, I have enjoyed it since I was very young. The satisfaction of completing a long equation using several complicated steps and then getting the right answer is thrilling.
Activities: I was one of the captains of may school’s Step team, the Soul steppers. We competed in our regional competition and received the highest score in the category. Because of this we had the opportunity to compete at Nationals in Atlanta. We also perform at showcases and school events.
I was also part of student council, where we organized and planned events such as pep rallies, school dances and more. In Science National Honor Society we work as a group to boost interest in science for younger students.
Next steps: I want to spend this summer traveling to different countries such as the Dominican Republic and Mexico, or to other states. I plan on going to school in Philly, looking at Temple University, Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. I would like to find a job within the field I am intereste in.
Career goals: My career goal is to become a forensic pathologist. I discovered this career in my medical course and fell in love with it. I am fascinated with the umand body and had always been into forensics as well, making this career perfect for me.
Heroes: My mother is my hero, as corny as it may sound, because she made me who I am today. She nev3er got to finish high school and had children at a pretty young age. On top of that my father was never really around during my childhood. My mother had to work an awful job at a warehouse 12 hours a day, five days a week, which is what led to her injuries/damage to both wrists today. Although she worked such long and tedious shifts, it was still barely enough to keep my family financially stable. She had gone through and is still going through a lot, but still managed to raise my sister and me and molded us into strong intelligent women. She taught us that education is so valuable and important and because of her I dedicated myself to school and my grades.
Hobbies: I have been dancing for about four years. I am also really into art and in my free time I like to sketch or paint, or I like to upcycle clothing. I find clothing at thrift stores for really cheap pricnes and turn it into completely different items so they just fit my figure.
Current job(s): I work at Chiplotle’s on Airport Road.
Volunteer/community work: I was a camp counselor for my school’s seventh grade camp trip, where I made sure the children in my group were safe at all times but having fun as well. I have also been part of my school’s MiniTHON since my sophomore year. In previous years we were able to raise almost $10,000, which is amazing for our very small school.
Likes: I am a pretty active person and enjoy stepping or dancing. I like to work out as well, mainly weightlifting. I also like to shop a lot, for anything ranging from clothing to art supplies. I really enjoy going on small adventures such as hikes, small road trips or going to the city with friends or family.
Dislikes: I like weightlifting, but I hate cardio. I used to love it but I injured my chest in an accident so now too much cardio will result in pain. Also, it is overall maddening. I also dislike lack of communication because communication is what keeps people on the same page.
Greatest accomplishment (so far): First place in the all female category; receiving distinguished honor roll every quarter since eighth grade; I worked all summer so I would be able to play mu entire dance tuition on my own so I would not have to worry about monthly payments; I was vice president of student council my junior year.
Advice for peers: Balance helps keep us sane. Education is extremely important; however, it is equally important to have a support system such as friends. When you feel stressed, it’s helpful to turn to someone you trust, because keeping feelings bottle to yourself will only intensify them. Live your high school years to the fullest and take risks because next thing you know you’ll be regretting not taking the spare time you had for granted. You can live your life while doing your school work to the best of your ability . there is no need to sacrifice on over the other.
