University of the Sciences

Melissa Vargas, of Coplay, and Jaden Daubert, of Northampton, were among the graduates recognized during University of the Sciences’ 199th commencement celebration, a virtual ceremony, held May 20.

Both graduated with Doctor of Pharmacy degrees.

University of the Sciences has prepared students to be leaders and practitioners in the health care and science fields for nearly 200 years. Key to its distinctive education is a tradition of hands-on research and experiential learning that is evident in every graduate who has walked its campus. Since its founding in 1821 as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy, the first college of pharmacy in North America, USciences has grown to more than 30 degree-granting programs from bachelor’s through doctoral degrees in the health sciences, bench sciences and health care business and policy fields.

Mansfield University

Mansfield University congratulates the students who were named to the president’s list for the spring 2020 semester, including Christopher Keays, of Catasauqua, and Trent Smith, of Northampton.

To be named to the president’s list, a student must attend the university full time and attain at least a 4.0 quality-point average for the semester.

University of Scranton

Whitehall residents Gabriela M. Campusano, Emily M. Frey and Theresa Anne Koch were among the more than 875 candidates whose bachelor’s degrees were conferred at the University of Scranton’s virtual undergraduate celebration ceremony May 31. Degrees were conferred to graduates who had completed their academic degree requirements in August and December 2019, as well as January and May 2020.

Campusano and Koch earned Bachelor of Science degrees in neuroscience, and Frey earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry.

A formal commencement ceremony, at which graduates will be individually recognized, will take place Oct. 25 at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, Wilkes-Barre.

Bucknell University

Bucknell University has released the dean’s list for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2019-20 academic year. A student must earn a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a scale of 4.0 to receive dean’s list recognition. The following students have achieved dean’s list status.

Muhlenberg College

Muhlenberg College students were recently honored at the 2020 honors convocation. The virtual ceremony celebrated academic achievement, community engagement, original research and commitment to the college. The event is a formal academic ceremony designed to honor and celebrate leadership and scholarly excellence and achievement.

This year marks the college’s 172nd year of higher education and, due to the nationwide impact of COVID-19, the first time the ceremony was conducted virtually.

Whitehall: Sabrina Barhoum received the Rev. Dr. H.H. Bruning Gift Fund Prize for a student whom the faculty deem most worthy.

Stephanie Haik received the Paul M. White ‘27 Business Award for students who specialize in the broad retail field.

Elijah Sommer received the Leslie R. Anders Memorial Prize as a senior chemistry or biochemistry major who has the highest academic average in chemistry or biochemistry after seven semesters.

Faculty and staff awards included the Class of 1932 Research Professorship, the Crossette Family Faculty Fellowship for International Research, the Donald B. Hoffman Research Fellowship, the Robert C. Williams Faculty Award, the Daniel J. and Carol Shiner Wilson Grant for the Completion of Scholarly Projects, the Spira Award, the Award for the Outstanding Advisor to First-Year Students, the Student Government Award, the Faculty Rising Scholars Award, the Chairman’s Award and the Hamre Prize.

The faculty address, “See You in the Classroom,” was given by Lanethea Mathews-Schultz, professor of political science.

Founded in 1848, Muhlenberg is a highly selective, private, four-year residential, liberal arts college located in Allentown. With an undergraduate enrollment of approximately 2,200 students, Muhlenberg College is dedicated to shaping creative, compassionate, collaborative leaders through rigorous academic programs in the arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences as well as selected preprofessional programs, including accounting, business, education and public health. The college is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. A member of the Centennial Conference, Muhlenberg competes in 22 varsity sports.
