Noise ordinance may be rewritten to address dirt bikes

At the May 21 Lower Milford Township Supervisors meeting, it was announced seven community members have petitioned against the use of dirt bikes around the area of McFettridge Lane. Specifically, it has been the noise and repetitive usage on the roads.

Township residents Ashley and Gary Bloss, who live on the road, spoke about their frustration and are looking for some type of update to the nuisance ordinance. It was also pointed out kids are driving on Leh Street and up Wind Hill Road to get to McFettridge Lane.

“We’d like to see if you guys could live with that noise next to your house ... It’s full-blown motocross,” Gary Bloss said.

Supervisor Donna Wright said she appreciated all of the voices being brought to the table. Ideas included outlawing use within 150 feet of a residence and time restrictions on when or how long they could ride.

Supervisor Ellen Koplin felt township residents would have much better luck accumulating their evidence and taking this themselves to the district magistrate to file a nuisance complaint. She cited the minimal staff at the township as a reason the township should probably not step in on this matter.

Supervisor John Quigley said the residents could also issue a complaint to the township zoning officer. But Solicitor Mark Cappuccio said the zoning officer for the township is not yet authorized to follow through on such a complaint. Plus, the township does not have a code enforcement team or person to follow up on these matters.

Koplin proposed Cappuccio and Zoning Officer Emily Fucci draft up a set of guidelines for the accused property owner in terms of riding hours and specific days. All supervisors agreed to this proposal. However, Quigley worried about the wording of this letter because they don’t want any terms or rules that could then hinder the agricultural businesses in the area. Specifically, he cited the numerous combines that run on the area’s local farms.

Wright said the supervisors will get together to discuss and potentially rewrite the nuisance ordinance, as many don’t think the language is clear enough in the ordinance.
