LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Fighting Hunger: Summer breakfast camps are canceled

We regret to inform you we will not be having our summer breakfast camps this year. It was a difficult decision, but we feel it is the safest one for everyone.

Our mission is to alleviate food insecurity in Whitehall and Coplay. Due to many job losses and reduced work hours, people are having difficulties. We are here for them and want people to come see us.

Tell your neighbors, relatives and friends about our food distributions. I had eight new families in Coplay last week.

The community outreach program will still operate 11 a.m.-noon and 6-7 p.m. June 18, July 2, 16 and 30 and Aug. 13 and 27 at Redeemed Christian Church of God, 5 N. Third St., Coplay, and St. John’s Lutheran Church, 835 Third St., Whitehall. Residents can only go to one location.

Identification is required. Nonresidents will be turned away but given resources for alternate food access.

We served 182 children, 195 adults and 73 seniors for a total of 450 residents June 4.

Every child in the household receives an individual bag. Households can receive one adult or senior bag. If our guests have a dog or cat, we also have food for them.

Second Harvest Food Bank supplies a 22-pound USDA farm box for each household. The boxes could not be transported from Philadelphia to Second Harvest for June 4 because of the riots. We hope to have them back again for the next distribution.

The distributions are every two weeks and are intended to supplement what food the residents already have. At this time, many residents have very little.

The inventory from Second Harvest varies, and food and monetary donations supplement what Second Harvest does not have.

We currently need fruit cups, graham crackers, individual oatmeal packets, jelly, Jif To Go packs, macaroni and cheese boxes and bowls, marinara or spaghetti sauce jars or cans, pasta/rice sides, pudding cups, chicken ramen noodles, saltine crackers, small boxes of raisins, cans of tuna or chicken and soup.

Please have the food shipped or dropped off at my office, Re/Max Unlimited, 1080 Schadt Ave., Whitehall. Leave it in front of the left door 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.

Do not tie bags on the door handles. People are in the building, even though it’s locked, and they will bring the food inside. Let me know if you are making food donations. You are all very much appreciated and needed.

Monetary donations are also greatly appreciated and should be made payable to Whitehall- Coplay Hunger Initiative. On the memo line put Community Outreach Program and mail to 1080 Schadt Ave., Whitehall, 18052. We are a 501(c)3 public charity, and your donation may be tax deductible. All donations go toward food purchases.

A sincere thank you goes to all who have made donations; to all the pantry volunteers at St. John’s who organize, unbox, sort and pack the bags; to Lana Snyder and Jacob Hausman for the many weekly hours they donate; to all the volunteers who help distribute the food to our guests; to Tom Noctor who picks up the food at Second Harvest and does anything else I ask; and to Joey Wildman and the Hokey Fire Hall workers who unload the Second Harvest food and then load our truck for the Coplay distribution. Without all of you, we could never do this program!

The Hokey Fire Hall people are returning to work and can no longer help after June 10. I need eight volunteers every two weeks for unloading and loading the truck and a couple more people for upcoming projects. Call me for more information.
