UPPER AND LOWER MILFORD COLUMN
Canceled; postponed; rescheduled. That is the status of many meetings and events over the past couple of months and probably into at least the immediate future due to COVID-19.
As I did last month, I’m reporting meetings that would normally be taking place if I haven’t specifically heard of any changes, but I once again suggest it would be wise to check with the sponsoring organizations of upcoming events or meetings before you go out.
The Lower Milford Township Fire Company carnival, normally held in June, has been canceled due to the coronavirus.
The Upper Milford Township Western District Fire Company has canceled its June breakfast and the chicken barbecue scheduled this month. They depend on fundraising events like this to help pay expenses needed to maintain the station, fuel the trucks and pay for future equipment purchases. If you would like to donate directly to the fire company, visit their website at https://uppermilfordfire.com.
The offices of both Lower and Upper Milford townships are still closed to the general public, waiting to hear Gov. Tom Wolf’s advisory.
In Lower Milford, the historical commission, planning commission and recreation and open space board have all canceled their June meetings. The board of supervisors meeting is still scheduled for June 18, but at this point it is undecided whether it will be held in person or via Zoom.
Upper Milford has also canceled most in person meetings, although some will still be held on Zoom. Check the township office or the township website for definitive information.
The Upper Milford Township playgrounds are still closed.
Meanwhile, there are some efforts underway locally to help people who have been impacted directly or indirectly by the virus. The Zionsville Food Pantry is asking for help from Upper Milford Township to collect personal care items for neighbors in need. The collection box will be outside the township office doors. The pantry is in need of the following items: toothpaste, single packaged toothbrushes, body wash, shampoo and deodorant. If you can pay it forward, reach out or donate. Many of our neighbors are struggling right now. For more information, go to zelcoz.org/food-pantry.html.
There will be a pet food drive 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 13 at the Lehigh Valley Baptist Church, 4702 Colebrook Ave., Emmaus, to benefit the Animal Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley. Needed is food for all kinds of pets, not just dogs and cats.
The Animal Food Bank’s mission is to keep companion animals in loving homes and prevent their surrender to the shelter system by supplying families with pet food in times of economic distress. For more information or for more ways to contribute, visit www.afblv.com.
The Lower Lehigh AARP, Chapter 4150, normally meets noon the first Thursday of the month, in the Upper Milford Township municipal building. However, they have canceled the June meeting. If you need more information, call Dorothy at 610-967-3284.
They normally do not meet in July and August.
The Upper Milford Township Historical Society canceled its March, April and May meetings, but we have no word yet on the meeting scheduled for June 25. If it is held, it will feature Jim Bongiovanni and Bill Beers of Pennsylvania Historical Recovery Services, talking about metal detecting and excavations near and far. If the meeting is held, it will be 7 p.m. at the Upper Milford Township building. Check www.uppermilford.org, when it gets closer to the date to see if it has been rescheduled.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Citizens Fire Company of Vera Cruz usually meets 7:30 p.m. the last Tuesday of the month at the Vera Cruz Fire Department Social Hall. We haven’t received any information about whether they plan to hold their June 30 meeting. For more information, email ladiesaux@vcfd28.com
If you have news or information for this column, which runs the first Wednesday of every month, please call me at 610-838-8923 or email me at bruce.swan@rcn.com. My deadline is May 24.
