Q & A... With Whitehall’s Kate Bonshak
Whitehall’s spring sports season featured a host of talented seniors whose final opportunity to represent their school on the athletic field ended when the school year was officially canceled. Following are a list of eight questions posed to seniors who would have been competing this season.
This questionnaire features Kate Bonshak, a two-time Eastern Pennsylvania Conference girls soccer MVP.
1: What are your plans for next year? What will you be studying?
“My plans are to attend Virginia Tech to play on the women’s soccer team and to major in human nutrition, food and exercise.”
2: Now that spring sports have been canceled, what is the biggest thing you’ll miss about no being able to compete your senior season?
“My events including the 100, 200, 4x100, and 4x400, is what I missed out on this year. The biggest things I’ll miss will be the season in general, and the success and chemistry of my 4x100 team. Track meets and practices are always such a fun time to be able to be around so many in school and out of school friends, while having a good time competing and getting better at what I do.”
3: You’ve played multiple sports, which one is your favorite and why?
“Throughout my high school career, I have played soccer, track, and field hockey (2 years). My favorite has to be soccer. It is the sport that I have played my whole life, and will continue to play. Track and field hockey were both something new for me, and it was an amazing experience to try something that is not specifically ‘my sport.’”
4: Heading into the season, what were your goals?
“For me, this year would have been a little different due to my injury from my fall season. So, this season’s goals would have also been different. I went into it with a mindset to continue my rehab for my ACL and meniscus tear, along with participating in what I physically could have during practices. I did still have the goal that I would reach the point with my knee where I would be able to be a part of the meets. But as long as I was still able to be there for and motivate my teammates, I was content.”
5: As a senior, you are going through something that’s unprecedented. Nothing like this has ever happened. What’s the best advice you’ve received?
“That I will now always be prepared for the worst. And the biggest lesson I can take out of this is that I will cherish each and every moment in my life, because I never know when it will be gone.”
6: What are you doing to fill the time?
“To fill the time, I am continuing my rehab and workouts, to get back to the athlete that I was before, and better. On top of that I have been completing my school assignments and working.”
7: Is there anything that’s been positive through all this?
“Finding positivity during these times has been a challenge for me. But I continue to do everything I can to keep an optimistic mindset. My future Virginia Tech teammates have been helping me, by keeping me in check, making sure I am doing well, and keeping us all in the loop with virtual workouts. Also, being able to spend all of this time with my family is something I will appreciate once I leave for college.
8: Of all your teammates, who is handling the isolation the best?
“As I continue to keep in touch with a handful of my teammates, I believe we are all doing what we can to make the best out of this difficult time.”
