When a young Fred Rogers was frightened by what he saw in the news, his mother would advise him to “look for the helpers.”

Those words which brought Mr. Rogers comfort during difficult times, still have meaning as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grip this nation and the world.

Rob and Sally Sayre of New Tripoli, however, took Mr. Rogers’ story to heart by just parking their RV in the driveway of a local physician.

Sayre explained that for more than a month, Dr. Gurabinder Singh, D.O., an anesthesiologist working at St. Luke’s Hospital, had sequestered himself from his wife, also a physician, and their children to keep them safe from the coronavirus.

The couple stayed in two different hotel rooms, away from their young children, ages 9 months and 2 years.

After 12-hour shifts, Singh was relegated to eating fast food and sleeping away from home, only to return to his hospital post in the morning.

And, that just didn’t seem right for the Sayres.

Now, thanks to the Sayres, Singh is able to see his family, even if it is from a bit from a distance, from his own driveway.

“My wife has been kind enough to make food for me,” Singh said.

“At least we can see each other, even if it’s 10 feet apart.”

Sayre first learned about the program, RVs 4 MDs on Facebook.

Surprised to discover they could make a difference in the life of a front-line doctor living minutes from his home, the couple decided to offer their RV.

“The group matches RV owners with doctors and other health professionals working directly with COVID-19 patients,” explained Sayre, adding sharing his RV is a way to appreciate the vital work Singh is doing.

“Now, we can think of the happiness they can share,” he said. “Besides, our RV, was just taking up space on our property.”

The Sayres acted when prospects for a vacation vanished.

“We would very likely have gone to Great Smokies National Park,” Sayre said, adding the pandemic forced a change in plans. “I’ve really been inspired by Dr. Singh’s sacrifice.”
