Over the past two years, Saquon Barkley has had his share of accolades as he has established himself as a fixture with the New York Giants and within the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut communities.

Barkley recently participated in a nationally televised Coronavirus fundraiser that highlighted recognized New Jersey personalities, and he also took part in a virtual “Take Your Child to Work Day” in which he provided workout tips.

Now, it is his younger brother Ali’s turn.

Ali Barkley, a soon-to-be Whitehall graduate, will continue his football and academic career at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut in the fall.

Over the past seven years, the prep school has produced 77 players who went on to play at major Division-I programs. Defensive end Wilfredo Aybar, who is regarded as a top-20 prospect, is a member of the Class of 2022.

Barkley rushed for 1,780 yards with 13 touchdowns for the Zephyrs last season. He did earn an invitation to the Big 33 game, which has since been canceled (see story at right). The 6-foot, 200-pound Barkley did make visits to major college programs such as Rutgers, Pitt, and Penn State, but he believed he has found a home.

“I made the decision because I didn’t have the grades to be eligible,” said Barkley. “For me and my family, I thought it was a good idea so I can mature and get my grades where they should be.

“It is a good fit football-wise because (head) coach (Dave) Dykeman really has a good background of putting people in college.”

Barkley sees a similarity to playing in the East Penn Conference (EPC).

“I feel like it will be just like playing in the EPC,” said Barkley. “No game will be easy and there will be a tough game very week.”

Whitehall head coach Matt Senneca sees Cheshire as a good temporary landing spot.

“I think it’s a great decision for him and a great opportunity to keep building on his abilities,” said Senneca. “He has such a high ceiling talent wise and this prep year gives him another chance to become the player we all know he is. We will definitely miss him this season, but wish him all the best in his goal of reaching college football.”
