FALCON INSIDER
Although there are still many uncertainties about the Salisbury High School Class of 2020’s end of year plans, some tentative plans have been made.
Based on many conversations and a survey sent to the senior class, graduation was rescheduled for July 22. It is hoped this new date will allow the class to have an in-person graduation at Miller Symphony Hall. However, if this is not possible at that date, a virtual graduation will be scheduled.
The Senior Academic and Service Award presentation is now going to be shared with seniors and their families on a slide show May 17. Also, the class trip was cancelled, as was prom, although there may be a summer social scheduled in the future.
In order to brighten seniors’ days, a Facebook group called “Adopt a Salisbury Senior” was created by Tracey Palenchar and Tricia Bickert.
This is an opportunity for parents to post about their graduating seniors and for community members to “adopt” members of the Class of 2020 and send them small gifts. Some recent senior deliveries have included snacks, gift cards, pizza or other small items.
The goal is to have all 144 seniors adopted. Even if they are not on Facebook, community members are welcome to support seniors by adopting one of them or by donating items to be used for seniors. As a member of the senior class, I can say that we love having the surprises come to our doors and are grateful to all who are supporting us in one way or another.
The start of the online AP exams is soon. Students planning on taking an AP test should make sure to check their email and follow the directions provided by the College Board.
Unlike most years, students will be taking the exams from home. These tests are only 45 minutes and often include a couple short answer questions or one long written response.
The grading system for high school students has been adjusted for the final quarter. Students must receive at least a 50 percent in the final quarter to pass the course. The average of the first three quarters of a course (or singular quarter if a semester course) will be taken and additional points will be added to their overall grade based on how well the student does in the fourth quarter.
For earning greater than a 90 percent, students receive three additional points; between 80-89 percent - two additional points; between 70-79 percent - one additional point and less than a 69 percent - no additional points.
Teachers can also award students an additional point if they attend the weekly Zoom session, communicate and complete their work. If the student’s average is higher when all four quarters are averaged (instead of using the point system), then the student will receive that grade instead.
Stay healthy and stay safe, Salisbury!
