STUDENT PROFILE - Jonathan Miller, Lehigh Valley Academy - Coordinated by Julie Swan
Grade: 12
Family members: I have my Mom and Dad, as well as two brothers and one sister.
Favorite subject: I like my design technology class because we get to design all sorts of cool things, and research different materials and their properties. The ability to use the design process to solve problems with my hands is a lot of fun.
Activities: I am an Eagle Scout from Troop 218, and even though I’ve aged out, I am still active with them. I am also active with my church and youth group at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
Next steps: I’m looking to further my education at Northampton Community College, and transfer to a trace school after that.
Career goals: I’d like to go into a trade, most likely carpentry or another building job.
Heroes: My hero is my grandfather, for playing such a large role in my life. He was a carpenter by trade, and uses his time to help others when no one else is looking. He has lots of knowledge that he loves to impart, and the world would be a much better place if more people were like him.
Hobbies: I enjoy building things, playing paintball and finding ways to help others.
Current job(s): I mow lawns for people in the community, and over the summer I worked for American Architectural Metal Manufacturers bending metal.
Volunteer/community work: I was a Boy Scout since fourth grade, and I aged out last July. However, I still help with the troop’s highway clean-ups, scouting for food drive and other service activities.
Likes: I like driving the truck I was able to purchase last summer.
Dislikes: I dislike high school drama and cold weather.
Greatest accomplishment (so far): For my Eagle Scout project, I expanded the garage of my church by adding another garage bay, a porch and an attic. It was a project that took over 2,000 man hours and we worked every weekend from August to May last year to finish it.
Advice for peers: People are a lot more willing to help you with your goals than you might think, and if you ask around, you might know people with professional backgrounds you never knew about. Don’t burn bridges, they may be very helpful.
