School district weighs options for graduation

With Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf’s mandate closing schools for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year, questions remain about many end-of-year school events.

Wolf released a guideline April 22 for a gradual reopening of the state. The plan calls for moving from the current red phase through a yellow phase with more flexibility while still enforcing safety restrictions, to the green phase, lifting the stay-at-home and closure orders while continuing to prioritize public health.

Wolf also extended the stay-at-home orders until May 25.

“Now that we have guidance from Gov. Wolf’s reopening plan, we are able to better plan end-of-year events,” said Adam Schnug, Catasauqua High School principal.

Schnug noted he has been working with Robert Spengler, Catasauqua Area School District superintendent, and the CASD Board of Education to create a plan.

In addition to seeing what other districts are doing, Schnug reported they are seeking feedback from members of the senior class.

“We want to know what they would like for graduation as a potential backup plan in case a traditional ceremony is not possible for safety reasons,” Schnug said.

According to the CHS Facebook page, the graduation ceremony has been set for 10 a.m. July 25 at Alumni Field. Backup dates are Aug. 1 or Aug. 8.

“That can only happen if Lehigh County is designated as being in the green phase under Gov. Wolf’s reopening plan,” Schnug said.

In the event the county is not yet in the green phase, he noted they are considering other options for a closure event for the senior class.

“Prom is under a similar plan,” he said. “It is being pushed back to summer but can only be held if Lehigh County is designated in the green phase of reopening.”

The senior awards event will be held virtually. According to Schnug, they are still working out the details and are expected to release more information this month.

Schnug reported the spring musical, “Crazy for You,” is postponed to a later date.

“Most likely it will take place next year,” he said.
