School board OKs proposed budget

At the Whitehall-Coplay School Board meeting May 4, the board approved the adoption of the proposed final 2020-21 general fund budget.

The vote was 8-1, with Tina Koren opposed.

The total amount of the budget was $76,283,709, up 2.21 percent from last year. As it stands, the proposed final budget balances revenues with projected expenditures, utilizing the fund balance, at a tax rate of 18.8809 mills, an increase of 4.5 percent from the previous year.

Upon its adoption, the proposed final budget will be advertised and publicly displayed in accordance with the Pennsylvania school code and Act 1 of 2006, which will allow for its final adoption no later than June 30.

James Hanna, project manager for D’Huy Engineering Inc., updated the board on the construction happening on the district campus.

In other news, the board re-elected George Williams as treasurer of the board of education, for a one-year term running July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021.

The board also approved the appointment of Williams to the Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit 21 board of trustees, to a term running July 1, 2020-June 30, 2023.

Also at the meeting, board members voted for candidates to fill the Lehigh Carbon Community College at-large trustee seat, with the term expiring at the end of June 2026. Both Bill Leiner and George Makhoul abstained.

Voting for Patrick H. Foose were Patty Gaugler, Wayne Grim, Nichole Hartman and Williams. William Fonzone Sr., Koren and Joseph Shields voted for Luiz D. Garcia.

These votes will be sent to LCCC to be tallied with those of other schools.

The next school board meeting will be held 7 p.m. June 8.

Committee meetings on education/student activities, operations/transportation and finance/personnel will be held 4 p.m. May 26 and June 22.

Senior awards will be held May 27, athletic awards are May 29 and graduation is June 4. All will be held virtually, and more information will be forthcoming.
