Commencement set for July 24 at stadium
There may be a graduation ceremony for the Northampton Area High School Class of 2020 after all.
The 4 p.m. June 6 ceremony originally to be held at Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena in Bethlehem has been moved to 7:30 p.m. July 24 at Al Erdosy Stadium on the Northampton Area School District campus.
In case of inclement weather, backup dates for the stadium ceremony are 9 a.m. July 25 and 7:30 p.m. July 26.
“We will evaluate the current guidelines set forth by the state (of Pennsylvania) and [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] as we get closer to July 24 regarding social distancing and other health-related guidelines,” NASD Superintendent of Schools Joseph S. Kovalchik said.
“All of us want to honor and recognize the Class of 2020 for their educational career in the district,” Kovalchik continued. “I’m very proud of the Class of 2020 and all that they have accomplished throughout their educational career, whether it was in or out of the classroom.
“Hopefully, we will be able to come together as a community and recognize those accomplishments,” Kovalchik said.
Members of the Class of 2020 were notified May 1 of the plans for the graduation ceremony.
“Whatever guidelines are in place at that time from the state and the CDC, the district will have to follow,” Kovalchik said. “The final (commencement) procedures we will establish will be announced later this summer.”
There will be some changes for the 2020 graduation ceremony.
An unlimited number of tickets will not be available to each graduate, which was policy for graduation ceremonies at Stabler.
Lehigh University refunded NASD’s $1,200 deposit on the $8,433.44 cost of the commencement at Stabler.
Stabler’s capacity is approximately 5,500, depending on the configuration of the floor (basketball court area) seating.
Erdosy stadium capacity is approximately 3,000.
That capacity is based on football fans sitting side by side.
Whether the 6-foot physical-distance guideline will be in effect in July is uncertain.
Commencement tickets and caps and gowns may be distributed when seniors drop off their Chromebooks to NAHS, which may happen in June.
“We’re trying to buy as much time as possible to recognize the Class of 2020, which we all want to do because it’s well deserved,” Kovalchik said. “Some view graduation as a senior year event. I view it as a cumulative 13 years spent in our educational system.”
