The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and resultant stay-at-home and nonessential business closings orders have increased the online offerings of arts and cultural organizations.

Libraries in the Lehigh Valley are continuing their online services. Overdue times and library card expirations have been extended.

The Bethlehem Public Library has many online resources, some new and some that have been in place for a while. The library is streaming its Yoga and Qigong classes online. Qigong, somewhat similar to Tai Chi, is said to use movement to enhance energy and health.

There’s a memoir-writing class and a cooking class by a staff member, who shares her cheesecake recipes.

The first in a series of author readings began with Kate Racculia, who read from her novel, “Tuesday Mooney Talks To Ghosts.”

The Bethlehem Library has loaned ebooks and audiobooks for a few years via the Overdrive app.

Says Bethlehem Area Pubic Library Executive Director John Berk, “A few years ago, ebooks were projected to take off, but it seems that many people still prefer to read print.

“Any book online can be checked out as a regular book. Because of publisher restrictions, there is only one license at a time,” says Berk.

If someone else is reading a particular ebook, you will have to wait until it is returned, as with books in print.

Films are available to stream via the Kanopy website using a library card. Berk calls Kanopy “an artsy Netflix, that tends towards foreign and indie films.” The limits on monthly use have been loosened. Information: www.bapl.org
