Zephs will miss the courts
Boys tennis was the only spring sports to officially begin its season, and Whitehall was looking to continue its recent success.
Last season they finished 7-8, the first time they finished below .500 in the last four seasons. With increasing numbers, they’ve seen a steady rise in the standings over that span.
Unfortunately, with the cancellation of school and the spring sports season the Zephyrs won’t take to the court again this year.
The Zephs were expected to have a large contingent of student-athletes to fill the all the slots. The team was to feature 11 players, with senior Daniel Lim leading this group of underclassmen. In fact, Lim was the only senior on the roster that also had no juniors.
Lim played No. 2 doubles last year alongside Daniel Jablonski. With the graduation of all three of their singles players, Lim would have slid into the No. 1 slot.
Lim and Jablonski qualified for last year’s district doubles tournament, and that experience playing the area’s best competition could have helped the transition to singles this year.
Manning the No. 2 singles spot would have been sophomore Josh Laky. Laky saw action last year playing No. 3 doubles.
At No. 3 singles would have been Daniel Labram. Labram is another returning varsity player who played at No. 4 doubles last season.
Their doubles teams featured a lot of newcomers with sophomores Gabby Roustic and Kyle Patton the only returning varsity players. Roustic played a lot at No. 4 doubles with Labram last year, and would have been paired alongside Patton at No. 2 doubles this season.
Occupying No. 3 doubles would have been juniors Lex Prebosnyak and Jimmy Kaba, while sophomore Henry Le and freshman Antoni Szlagiewicz were to play No. 4 doubles.
The team also had junior Brian Ta, as well as freshman Nathan Mak.
They were preparing for their first home match against Allen on March 13 when schools across the state closed.
However, they managed to play two matches prior to the suspension. They dropped a 6-0 match to Liberty, who many had winning the EPC.
In that match, Lim was the lone singles player to take any games from the Hurricanes’ singles lineup. He lost in straight sets to Louis Gruber, 6-2, 6-0.
Their doubles teams also couldn’t break through against the ‘Canes as Liberty didn’t drop a set in all three matches.
They lost their next match to Bethlehem Catholic.
