MACUNGIE BOROUGH COUNCIL
Engineer Stan Wojciechowski provided an update on the Main Street Streetscape Project Phases 2, 3 and 4 at the April 20 Macungie Borough Council meeting. The meeting was held via teleconferencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wojciechowski said some delays on the project are due to the current issue with COVID-19. Landscaping of the bump-outs has been completed. Mulching of the trees is being readjusted as mulch must be at the proper level.
The fifth payment is being made in the amount of $95,992. A refund is guaranteed from the state for grant money applied for and approved.
A question arose about low wires on one side of Main Street. The wires will be raised but the project is delayed due to COVID-19. Work is scheduled to resume April 22.
The public works department has removed sewer bags from the bump-outs. The final bag was to be removed April 22.
Council Member Roseann Schleicher received a request from Tax Collector Cynthia Hartzell. All tax payments are to be made at Hartzell’s home, 60 S. Chestnut St. The payment can be mailed to that address or placed in a locked drop box at her shed. If a receipt is needed, a stamped, self-addressed envelope should be included. Payment should be made in the form of a check or money order.
Macungie Police Department Sgt. Travis Kocher spoke about conditions in the borough during this pandemic. He said there is a decrease in crime. Kocher expressed his concern about the need for everyone to be safe.
With COVID-19, Gov. Tom Wolf signed Senate Bill 841 which, among other items, allows for remote public meetings. It also provides flexibility on property tax deadlines.
In other business, to alleviate some expenses, the heat was reduced at the Macungie Institute. It was also suggested to hold a payment to the library.
A thank-you note was sent by the borough for the new Macungie Bear.
Emergency Management Coordinator Mike Natysyn is working closely with Lehigh County Emergency Management during this pandemic.
An emergency payment for personal protection equipment was made. An anonymous donor assisted with this payment.
Roof repair was approved for borough hall. There was damage to the roof from the chimney which was sealed and repaired.
An executive session was held.
