STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Q. Who are the members of your family: parents, siblings and pets?
A. I live with my mom Laura, younger sister Rachel and cats Sarah and Sammy.
Q. What do you most enjoy about being a senior at Emmaus High School?
A. My favorite thing about being a senior is enjoying the last moments I have with my friends, teachers and reaping the rewards from working hard throughout high school with college decisions.
Q. What is your favorite subject? Why?
A. I love foreign language and have taken French for years. I’m also a huge English person, so I would say my literature class is my favorite this year. I love talking about the classics and doing analysis, hearing from my classmates and writing.
Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?
A. I’m most proud of placing bronze last year in the Grand Concours National French Exam. I hadn’t expected to win anything from the competition, so it was a happy surprise.
Q. What are your favorite extracurricular activities?
A. I’m really involved in school activities, but I care the most about my independent study and collection of Native American artifacts. I am also a member of the Pennsylvania Earth Science Association, where I attend field collecting trips for rocks and minerals. I’m known by some as the “rock girl,” which is fitting.
Q. What is your next goal after high school?
A. I plan on attending a 4-year university and potentially studying archaeology, French, international politics or all three. Ultimately, I hope to get published and present research as an undergrad.
Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?
A. This may be cheesy, but applying to college was so anxiety-provoking. You write and reflect on yourself like never before. Your whole academic career is put under a microscope and judged. There are also so many unknowns within the process and it determines the next direction of life. It’s not a small feat.
Q. For what would you like to be remembered?
A. I’d like to be remembered for my individuality and passion. I’ve never shied away from discussions or debates because I love sharing my ideas and interests. From politics to geology or history, I like to engage with others in this way.
Q. Whom do you admire? Why?
A. I admire my mom so much. She has made her own way in life by following her dreams and becoming a successful artist and author. She always supports me, no matter what my interests or goals are.
Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?
A. Do what you love in high school. Time flies by the time you’re a senior, so I think it’s important to focus on developing yourself, your interests and your relationships in a way that is meaningful. Often, we get stuck in competitive or stressful bubbles because everyone is worried about getting into college and getting ahead. We have to be mindful of staying true to ourselves and taking time to be involved with what we want. So don’t spend too much time worrying; your hard work will pay off.
