A centenarian shares advice for a long and healthy life

Albert Fraind, of Allentown, who is known as “Dad,” “Pop,” “Uncle” and “Great Uncle” turned 100 years old recently.

He had a birthday celebration at a local restaurant surrounded by family from all over the country.

Fraind has lived a fascinating life and has done several speaking engagements in which he shares with audiences about the challenging times he survived.

Fraind is a World War II veteran who served under General George S. Patton. Fraind’s entire life has been devoted to helping and protecting people.

When the war was over and he came home, Fraind had to start a new life for himself. Fraind and his late wife, Norma, ran a corner grocery store in Allentown for many years. He was also a fire chief in Allentown for 30 years.

Soon after he retired from the fire department, Fraind became an ombudsman and medical caseworker for Lehigh County. He said he remembers taking classes on how to help families and find care for their aging parents. He continued working in this position into his 80s.

He said all of his jobs involved helping people and he considers himself a people person as he really enjoys talking to people. He avoids politics and religion and believes it is one of the things that has helped him to reach old age.

Fraind keeps active and wakes up early each day to go to the gym where he lives. Prior to this he would swim and work out daily at the Jewish Community Center of the Lehigh Valley, Allentown. There his pool miles and distance were recorded and he received certificates for swimming the length of the English Channel multiple times.

Fraind has always been a healthy eater and continues to cook for himself daily in addition to doing his laundry and watching the news to keep up with current events.

Fraind takes life as it comes and accepts life and the changes it brings such as aches and pains and deaths of friends or relatives. He believes in the power of prayer and feels this has helped him get through the changes throughout his life.

Fraind received a citation in the mail from President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump on the occasion of his 100th birthday.

So his advice; stay active, eat healthy, take life as it comes, pray, stay current with the world and be social with people.
