The local sports scene has taken the lead from Governor Tom Wolf during the coronavirus pandemic, but today’s news that all Pennsylvania schools would remain shut down for the rest of the school year might be the final nail in the coffin.
The Governor announced on Thursday the news that shouldn’t surprise anyone about schools being shutdown the rest of the year.
“We must continue our efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus during this national crisis,” Wolf said in a news release. “This was not an easy decision but closing schools until the end of the academic year is in the best interest of our students, school employees and families.”
Schools have been closed since March 16 and the spring sports calendar has been on hold with it.
The eyes now move to the PIAA, who will have to make a decision on what to do with the already shortened spring season, as well as the disrupted winter championships.
Liberty athletic director Fred Harris expects direction on how the sports season will play out any day now.
“I expect the PIAA to make an announcement between now and next Tuesday,” said Harris.
That decision might be the one we all thought would happen.
