As a former home- schooler, I have a lot of educational resources around the house. I gave Ben a week of coronavirus school shutdown time to relax, play video games and catch up on jobs at home. While cleaning up piles of paperwork, I ran into a book “100 Words Every Middle Schooler Should Know.” I showed this to Ben and announced on the second week that we were going to work on it (Note: really hoping we won’t be on lockdown for 100 days!). My announcement was met with groans and protests but I persevered.

The first word was adversary. I first read an excerpt from a Harry Potter book, hoping to get him to figure out the meaning in context, which, after a lot of coaxing, he finally did. One of the words derived from the root was adversity which is certainly timely. Later, as I recounted our first schooling foray with a less than enthusiastic student to my husband, he burst out laughing. Ben demonstrated the meaning of adversary perfectly with his attitude that morning!

The copy deadline for the May 6 column will be April 30.
