Upper Milford Township Supervisors got an earful at the March 5 meeting when residents challenged the need for a burn ban which has been in effect since Feb. 27.

“What’s the deal with the burn ban the last couple of weeks?” a resident from the back of the room asked.

“How many brush fires do you want to put out?” Supervisor Joyce Moore asked.

“How many have you had?”

“We’ve had four so far,” Supervisor Robert Sentner who is also a firefighter with the Vera Cruz Fire Department Station 28, said.

“There’s overreach in the township,” resident Colt Hershinger said in a post-meeting interview. “DCNR doesn’t have any restrictions whatsoever. Other townships are waiting for DCNR to enact restrictions before they act and our township’s banning it when its raining three days a week.”

Hershinger said he is a landscaper.

Assistant Fire Chief Jason Tapler explained wet ground is not a bar to wildfires.

In other business, Moore called for a moment of silence in memory of “long-time community volunteer William Stahler” who died March 1.

Sentner said joint fire department training “went well.” He said firefighters learned about putting out fires in electric vehicles.
