SALISBURY TOWNSHIP BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

COVID-19 has cast its shadow across Salisbury Township, not only closing Salisbury Township School District schools, on the order of Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, but also canceling several Salisbury Township municipal meetings and events.

“I think to be prudent, the board should cancel the next meeting,” Salisbury Township Manager Cathy Bonaskiewich said at the March 12 township meeting.

Bonaskiewich announced the cancellations don’t only include the commissioners’ meeting.

“We would have the same judgment regarding EAC [township Environmental Advisory Council], ZHB [township Zoning Hearing Board] and planners [township Planning Commission],” Bonaskiewich said.

“We won’t have another [commissioners] meeting in March and we’ll assess the situation in April,” Bonaskiewich said.

Commissioners are scheduled to meet 7 p.m. April 9.

According to the township website, the cancellations include:

- 7 p.m. March 18 Salisbury Township Environmental Advisory Council

- 7 p.m. March 26 Salisbury Township Board of Commissioners

The 7:30 pm. March 16 Salisbury Township Recreation Advisory Committee was also canceled.

“I spoke with Ginnie [Baillie, township recreation director] and there probably will be no egg hunt,” Bonaskiewich said during the March 12 meeting.

The annual township egg hunt is canceled “due to concerns regarding COVID-19,” according to a March 13 announcement on the township website.

“And I spoke with SYA [Salisbury Youth Association] and if the schools close, they [SYA] probably won’t have events,” Bonaskiewich said.

Also “canceled due to concerns regarding COVID-19,” according to the township website, is the SYA versus the Salisbury Township Police Department basketball game, 4-6 p.m. March 28, in the Salisbury High School gymnasium.

Township Commissioner Heather Lipkin said coronavirus information is available at the state government website: https://www. health.pa.gov/Pages/default.aspx#.

“They have extensive information on there,” Lipkin said. “We’re supposed to avoid large gatherings, including gyms, movie theaters and shopping malls,” Lipkin said.

It was noted at the March 12 meeting evening hours for yard waste drop-off sites will not begin until the month of June.

Devonshire is open the first and third Tuesday and Saturday. Franko is open the second and fourth Tuesday and Saturday. Both sites are open 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Monday and Thursday hours of operation in June, July and August are 3-6 p.m. and alternate between sites. The township website includes monthly charts of the schedule.
