CHS duo falls short at states

Catasauqua sophomore Jaryn Hartranft and senior Adam Reinhart both ended their seasons lately with their first appearances at the PIAA Class 2A state wrestling tournament.

Hartranft, who wrestled at 106 after spending most of the season at 113, won an opening match, 8-5, over Bald Eagle’s Coen Bailey. But he then suffered a defeat in the quarterfinals and eventually was eliminated in the third round of consolations. He was the runner-up at districts for the second consecutive year.

Reinhart, who wrestled at 195, was the victim of a fall to Line Mountain’s Dominick Birdi in 1:50 during the preliminary round. He then was eliminated in the first round of consolations. Reinhart was fourth at districts.

Despite the early exit, Reinhart truly enjoyed the moment from start to finish this season.

“It was a great experience going out to the Giant Center and wrestling in front of all those people and under the lights,” said Reinhart. “I’ll never forget what it was like in that environment.

“This season was a great one not just for me but for the whole team. The team did exactly what they needed to do and we had a lot of success throughout the season. We got fourth at team districts and moved three guys on to regionals and then two to states. That was awesome.

“The guys on this team will always hold that special spot in my heart and most of the younger guys are going to do great for (head) coach (Joe) Russo and the program. Hopefully, they will bring back some hardware from Hershey.”

During the season, the Rough Riders finished third overall in their own tournament. They also were fourth in the Jim Thorpe Tournament, third in the Zephyr Mat Classic, fourth at District Team Duals, seventh in individual districts, and 17th in regionals.

Junior Austin Brett was fourth at districts in the 126-pound bracket, and freshman Gavin Fehr was sixth in the 126-pound bracket at the same tournament.

Adam Reinhart dropped his first two matches at states last weekend.
