The cast and crew of the Salisbury High School production of “Into the Woods” were putting the finishing touches on the spring musical at their dress rehearsal March 8.

The show features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and follows several beloved fairy-tale characters as they make their way through the musical’s namesake dark and mysterious woods.

The show will be performed 7 p.m. March 12-14 and 3 p.m. March 15. Tickets are available by emailing salisburytheatre@salisburysd.org or by calling 610-797-4107, ext. 2508. Tickets can also be purchased at the door.

The main characters in the show are a childless baker and his wife, who want nothing more than to have a child. They are enticed by a witch to enter the woods and find a list of strange items that, when delivered to her, will break the curse on their house and allow them to bring a child into the world.

On their quest, they meet many strange and amazing friends (and enemies) all the while learning about one another and what people will do to have their wishes come true. Familiar names like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Prince Charming wind their way into the rich fabric of the story told across two acts.

Director Will Erwin is very excited to have this production come to life on stage at SHS.

“This is one of the most challenging shows we’ve done here. Musically, it has been a beautiful challenge because in a way the music is its own character in the play,” Erwin said.

Erwin also said costuming is a challenge, with several transformations taking place onstage.

“At the end of it all, it has been challenging but also fun. The show is about family, mothers, love and loss. It’s very beautiful and I feel the students have truly risen to the challenges this piece presents,” Erwin said.

“It’s been amazing working with the production staff as well. It has been a wonderful experience since theater is truly a collaborative effort,” Erwin said.
