Swim season ends at district meet
Looking at his team as a whole, Whitehall head swimming coach Pete Rile believed his squad could compete with any team in the East Penn Conference.
When it came to individual performances in the recent District 11 meet, Rile realized it might be a different story.
“When we matched up head-to-head, it was a good situation for us,” said Rile. “But we didn’t have the individual strength you need at districts.
“Overall, though, we did swim well. In our relays, both the boys and the girls.”
The Zephyrs had 10 girls and nine boys participate in districts, but they didn’t have any medal winners. Overall, the girls’ team finished 12th out of 15 teams, and the boys’ unit was 14th out of 16 teams.
Senior Nic Martinovic did break the school record in the 100 backstroke, previously held by Dan Jablonsky. He finished 14th in the event and also recorded the same finish in the 50 free.
Lindsay Solderitch had a 13th place finish in the 100 breaststroke to top the girls’ team. The girls’ 200 freestyle and the boys’ 400 freestyle relays teams both recorded seventh-place finishes.
The girls’ team will lose seniors Madelyn Kutney, Ella Holmes, Sabrina Kidulic, Kayla Jandrasitz, Emily Haggerty, and Hannah Miller, while the boys’ squad will lose Martinovic, Ahmed Hamada, Alberto Cervoni, and Sebastian Solarte.
Solarte and Martinovic paced the boys’ scoring throughout the season.
“We thought he (Solarte) had a shot at districts in the 100 butterfly,” said Rile. “But he just put too much in the first three-fourths of the race. He and Nic (Martinovic) really did a nice job for us this season.”
The girls’ team ended with a 12-4 regular season mark, while the boys were 9-6-1. It was only the second time the boys had a winning slate since the 1960s. The boys team narrowly lost meets to Pottsville and Northampton and had two boys sidelined with the flu against Moravian Academy in a defeat.
Rile is optimistic about next season with solid numbers on both sides. The Zephyrs will deal with the revolving league schedule and face Liberty, Nazareth, Parkland.
“We will be trying to reload and face another tough schedule,” added Rile. “But we like our position right now, and we’re looking forward to next season.”
