Reinhart, Hartranft advance to states

Even though it didn’t begin well, Adam Reinhart’s plan eventually worked out.

“It was a great weekend,” said the Catasauqua 195-pound senior. “Everything fell right into place like we planned.

“Losing my second match was tough, but coming back the next day, and winning both my next two matches that qualified me to go to states was awesome.”

Reinhart and junior Jaryn Hartranft will begin wrestling Thursday night in the PIAA state tournament at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Reinhart (32-13) finished sixth overall in his weight class and earned his ticket when he recorded consecutive falls in consolation matches.

Hartranft (37-5) was third overall in the 106–pound bracket. He recorded a pair of pins before he dropped a 10-4 decision to West Perry’s Deven Jackson in the semifinals.

Overall, the Rough Riders were 17th in a 51-field in the Class 2A Southeastern Regional at Freedom High School. It will be the first trip for both Reinhart and Hartranft to Chocolate Town. Hartranft was one win shy of advancing last year.

They became the program’s 39th and 40th wrestlers to make it to the big stage.

The Roughies were coming off a seventh-place finish at districts. Hartranft was second and Reinhart was fourth a week earlier.

“Jaryn (Hartranft) dominated and pinned his first two opponents and punched his ticket for states,” said Roughies’ head coach Joe Russo. “He lost a difficult decision in the semis and then wrestled back to third.

“He was solid on his leg attacks all tournament, and he controlled and turned his guys on top.”

Russo was equally impressed with Reinhart.

“Adam (Reinhart) pinned the District Three runner-up and then he lost a back and forth match. He came close to qualifying Friday. He then came back Saturday morning and got a pin to make states. He got taken down near his back, but fought it off.

“When he got to his feet, he bear-hugged the guy to his back and pinned him for the win.

“We are hoping to return from Hershey with two state medalists.”
