Concession stand needs

Beth Downing, Amy Fatzinger, Jessica Fronina and Dawn Pizzuto from the Northwestern Youth Athletic Association attended the February meeting of the Northwestern Recreation Commission.

They asked about opening the concession stand beginning with the first baseball game of the season.

They reported when they inspected the building, they found mold, equipment that was not working and there is a leak in the roof.

The recreation commission will take care of the leak in the roof, but the equipment - stoves and refrigerators - belong to the NYAA.

Groundskeeper Jim Hughes said the water heater is also causing problems.

Hughes said he could take care of the leak in the roof.

Rick Hughes, Lowhill Township representative, asked about the cost.

Some of the equipment will be accepted by PPL with payment, if it is still in running condition.

Downing said having the stand open would bring in some money for the NYAA.

Recreation Commission member Todd Hernandez said the building was not in use because the NYAA could not get enough volunteers to run it.

Downing asked if they were being given permission to use the stand.

Pizzuto looked into costs and said it would run between $8,000 and $10,000.

Jim Hughes said they should get rid of the cabinets rather than try to clean the mold.

“Take the whole thing apart,” he said.

In other matters, Kathy Hermany gave the Night in the Country report. The same band, Steel Creek, will be at the August Night in the Country as there have not been any complaints.

Lower Macungie Fire Company told her they will not be able to attend this year.

Hermany will need a check to pay for the golf carts that are used.

The annual walk-around at the Northwestern Recreation Commission Community Park fields will take place 8 a.m. March 28.
