Seniors Joel Valencia, of Northampton Area High School, and Isiah Quinones, of Liberty High School, competed at the Greater Lehigh Valley Automotive Dealers Association Automotive Technology Competition Feb. 15. Representing Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School, they competed against students from Upper Bucks County Technical School, Lehigh Career & Technical Institute, Carbon Career and Technical Institute and Monroe Career and Technical Institute.
The seniors distinguished themselves by placing first. In doing so, they won 100-percent paid full-ride scholarships to Universal Technical Institute ($45,000-$50,000 value) as well as 50-percent scholarships to Northampton Community College ($4,000 value).
Moving forward, they will be representing BAVTS, GLVADA and Team Subaru at the National Automotive Technology Competition in New York City in April. At the national competition, they will be competing against 30 to 40 schools from all around the country as well as Team China.
The national competition awards more than $3 million in prizes and scholarships to the 30 to 40 teams.
Valencia is employed by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation-Northampton County.
Quinones is employed by Kelly Automotive Group in Emmaus.
