Roughies advance three
After a successful regular season, Catasauqua’s wrestling team anticipates continuing their progress in the postseason.
Sophomore Jaryn Hartranft (103), junior Austin Brett (126), and senior Adam Reinhart (190) all were among the top-four finishers in their weight brackets at districts last weekend, and they will be advancing to the Class 2A Southeastern Regionals.
Hartranft (33-4) advanced to the finals and lost a 9-4 decision to Notre Dame’s Evan Maag, who beat him in the district final last year.
Brett (27-12) had to default due to a foot injury in his third-place bout with Saucon Valley’s Travis Riefenstahl, and Reinhart (29-9) was the victim of a fall in his third-place bout with Saucon Valley’s Brayden Lugardo. Brett is doubtful to compete at regionals.
Overall, the team finished seventh in the 22-team field.
“Jaryn Hartranft easily rolled into the finals and battled for the second-straight year with Maag from Notre Dame,” stated Rough Riders’ head coach Joe Russo. “He fell short pushing him at the end gaining stalling points against Maag to finish the match. He continues onto next week where he seeks his first trip to Hershey, and is a machine right now racking up 33 season wins.
“Austin Brett manhandled his opponents pinning a regional qualifier from North Schuylkill then losing in the semis to a nationally ranked wrestler from Notre Dame. In the consolations. He was primed for a strong run at a trip to Hershey but won’t be able to compete due to the injury. He was a force down the stretch winning 11 out of his final 14 matches and currently has 61 career wins.”
Despite his injury, Brett was pleased with his performance.
“It was a good tournament for me and the other guys who placed,” said Brett. “I had a tough match in the semis and ended up wrestling for third and fourth. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to finish.”
“Adam Reinhart moved up a weight class for the postseason,” said Russo. “He beat a former regional qualifier from Wilson and made it to the semis losing to the top seed. He pinned his way to a 4th place finish qualifying for regionals and has a great shot to punch his ticket to states next week.”
Reinhart also was pleased he stayed with his plan for his inaugural trip to regionals.
“I think things went the way we planned them to go,” said Reinhart. “My coach and I talked about what weight we should go for districts, and we were seeing the pros and cons of 195. At first, we weren’t going to do it, but getting fourth place was great.
“I’ve never been to regionals and never seen some of these guys, but I am ready to take on whatever comes and finish my season year with a bang.”
Freshman Gavin Fehr (28-14 at 126) finished sixth overall in his weight class, capping a fulfilling first year.
“Gavin Fehr had a fantastic freshman year finishing the season with 28 wins,” added Russo. “Like (Jake) Nye, he moved up a weight for the tournament. Along the way, he knocked off a few upperclassman and clawed his way to a sixth-place district finish failing just short of a regional spot.”
Russo had to deal with the reality of seniors Ben Langsdorf, Zach Scheirer and LaVonte Bouie (285,19-11) ending their careers. He also credited the contributions from Nye (21-14),Luis Del Rosario (7-17), Dom Melendez (2-20), Conlin Gair (2-26) and Donnie Gair (7-24)
“One of the hardest things as a coach is seeing your seniors finish that final match of their careers,” stated Russo. “Ben (Langsdorf) didn’t have a winning record or get the accolades that others earned this year, but three dual meets came down to his match and he won all of them pushing us over the top. Zach (Scheirer) doubled his win total from last year finishing with 14, and we obviously lose one of the programs fan favorites in Bouie. Those seniors now enter the fraternity and will always part of the Catty wrestling family.”
