Zoo euthanizes gray wolf Necropsy shows Alpha had brain tumor

The Lehigh Valley Zoo announced Feb. 13 that its Mexican gray wolf, Alpha, was euthanized the previous day.

He was one of three wolves, all brothers, who have been at the Lehigh Valley Zoo for 10 years.

Alpha presented neurological signs for several days before his death, and veterinary and keeper staff began to monitor him constantly and provide supportive care over the following days.

His mental and physical health showed no signs of improvement and by Monday into Tuesday, his health took a sharp decline.

A necropsy showed Alpha was suffering from a brain tumor that was most likely the root cause of the neurological signs observed by staff.

The wolves have been an iconic species at the Lehigh Valley Zoo for many years and guests have always enjoyed watching the pack explore its habitat.

Alpha contributed greatly to the Lehigh Valley community, as well as to his species, and his grace and beauty will forever be remembered by all who had the good fortune to see him.

Keeper staff will continue to closely monitor the remaining two wolves to ensure they continue to thrive despite the loss of their pack leader.
