Ready for a Challenge Zach Scheirer is preparing for another battle, hoping for a long run in the postseason

As he enters districts this week, Catasauqua senior Zach Scheirer realizes the challenges ahead as he will try to make it an eventful run.

Off the mat, however, Scheirer already has endured the rigors of working toward a gold medal.

He recently was named the school football scholar-athlete to be honored at the National Football Foundation Lehigh Valley Chapter Dinner in Northampton March 1.

Yet, getting to be recognized in the category was a momentous honor in itself. Scheirer has battled though bouts of dyslexia throughout his education. He credited the assistance of teachers Mrs. Reilly, Mrs. Lesko, and Mr. Yanek along the way.

“It is huge honor being selected to be the Catasauqua football scholar-athlete,” said Scheirer. “It really means a lot to me because I never thought I could ever do this.

“At some point, it has been a struggle having dyslexia. But the teachers at Catty and my parents have helped me learn to overcome this obstacle.

“Mrs. Reilly helped me through seventh- and eighth-grade. She helped me learn to adapt and use my strengths to my advantage. Mrs. Lesko and Mr. Yanek have helped me since freshman year. They are always there when I struggle and help me to get back to my best.”

The positive results have helped Scheirer adjust in the classroom and also in wrestling, football and track. In addition, Scheirer is a member of the North Catasauqua Fire Department for more than three years.

“With my teachers’ help, my confidence has grown and it has gotten me more involved with the community.

“It is a great experience, and I really do encourage anyone to get active in the community.”

Head wrestling coach Joe Russo isn’t surprised with Scheirer’s accomplishments.

“Zach (Scheirer) is a hard worker and knows what he had to do,” said Russo. “He has been a leader for the young kids. He battled through some injuries and got some huge wins and pins when we really needed them.”

Former football coach Mike McClarin also appreciated his efforts.

“He (Scheirer) always did whatever we asked him to do and plenty more,” stated McClarin. “He stepped it up this season and helped set examples. Zach is an aggressive athlete and a fine young man.”

At press time, district matchups weren’t yet released. Scheirer will enter this weekend’s tournament at Freedom with an overall 12-9 record in a crowded and talented field. He didn’t place at districts last year.

“I feel really good going into districts,” he stressed. “I had a good year for wrestling, and I hope to continue to have the same kind of success in districts.”

Whether he does or not, Scheirer already has received some of life’s gold medals around his neck.
