Allen, Bethlehem Catholic win EPC titles; SL, Notre Dame take Colonial League crowns

Four top-seeded teams earned league basketball championships this week as tournaments were completed in both the East Penn Conference and Colonial League.

In the EPC title games, Allen boys beat Liberty and Bethlehem Catholic girls held off Nazareth Thursday night at the PPL Center. In the Colonial League, Southern Lehigh upended Bangor for the boys title and Notre Dame (Green Pond) took down Moravian Academy for the girls championship Friday at Freedom High School.

The No. 1 seed Allen boys team jumped out to a 33-20 halftime lead en route to a 64-42 win over No. 2 Liberty. A’Quele Adderly scored a game-high 14 point for the Canaries, while Liberty was led by Antonio Montgomery’s 10 points.

Allen moves on to districts as the No. 1 seed in Class 6A.

The defending state champ Bethlehem Catholic girls team beat No. 2 Nazareth 34-28. Kourtney Wilson and Taliyah Medina led the Golden Hawks with 10 points each in the win. Nazareth’s Kelly Leszcynski scored a game-high 15 points.

Bethlehem Catholic earned the No. 1 seed for the District 11 Class 4A girls tournament.

In the Colonial League finals, No. 1 Southern Lehigh got 33 points from Daryl Coleman in a 70-51 win over No. 6 seed Bangor. Gabe Zieba led the Slaters with 13 points.

The Spartans will be the No. 2 seed in Class 5A. Schuylkill League champ Pottsville earned the top spot in 5A based on ratings points.

Notre Dame (Green Pond) earned a 49-46 win over No. 3 Moravian Academy for the Colonial League girls crown.

Antonia Bates led the Crusaders with a game-high 21 points.

The Lions had three players with 12 points each in Grace Moser, Marina Falzone and Maya Ettle. Teammate Quinn O’Conner scored her 1,000th career point in the loss.

Notre Dame heads into districts as the top seed in Class 3A.

District tournament play begins with pigtails games early this week and quarterfinals rounds Friday and Saturday.
