It’s a different type of year for the Whitehall swim team this winter. Yet, the Zephyrs still expect the same outcome at the upcoming district meet at the end of February.

“We’re getting good times and not necessarily first places,” said Zephyrs’ head coach Pete Rile. “It’s been a different type of year where we have more overall depth and not as many qualifiers.

“But we should have some more qualifiers at the end of the season.”

Rile has been impressed with both of his team’s overall performances this season. Heading into the week, the girls’ team had an 11-4 record, while the boys were 8-6-1.

“We have about 25 girls with five or six freshmen, and we have 16 boys, the biggest number we have ever had,” added Rile. “That’s a good sign for us.

“We may not have a lot of firsts, but we’re getting the second- third-, and fourth-places pretty consistently. We have a lot of young swimmers who are starting to come into their own. We’re looking stronger as a team.”

Four Zephyrs have qualified for districts.

On the girls’ side, senior Madelyn Kutney has qualified for districts in the 200 freestyle and the 200 breaststroke. Junior Lindsay Solderitch has made her mark in the 100 breaststroke and the 100 freestyle.

On the boys’ end, senior Nik Martinovic can go to districts in the 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and the 50 freestyle. Fellow senior Sabastian Solarte-Vigil has qualified in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle, the 200 IM and the 100 butterfly.

Rile noted that each of them can only swim in two events.

The Zephyrs will conclude their regular season Thursday with a meet at Allentown Central Catholic.
