District News: School district closed for holiday

For the Presidents Day holiday, Whitehall-Coplay School District will be closed Feb. 14 and 17.

WCSD is continuing registration for kindergarten for the 2020-21 school year. Your child must be 5 years old before Sept. 1.

Parents/guardians must complete the online registration by visiting whitehallcoplay.org. Select a date and time to meet with Michelle Khouri, district registrar, to present all the required documentation. The list of required documents is available to view on the website.

Parents/guardians will be given an appointment to bring their child to meet with the guidance counselor, principal, school nurse, ESOL teacher and reading specialist for a brief assessment at Gockley Elementary School April 20- 22.

The deadline to register kindergarten students online is March 27.

Gockley Elementary is holding a Penn State Penny Challenge, beginning Feb. 18 and continuing through Feb. 28. Students will be collecting spare change to support Whitehall High School’s MiniTHON team.

Each classroom will keep change donations in a Penn State bucket during the challenge. The top three classes in each grade will receive a pizza party in the cafeteria.

Feb. 27 is blue/white day at Gockley to support this cause. Students and staff will be wearing blue and white to show their support for WHS students who are involved in this charitable event.

The Gockley nurse’s office would like to remind parents that many family physical and dental reports are past due. If you chose to provide a family physical and/or dental report for your child this year and have not yet returned them, please do so as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, contact the nurse’s office.

WHS students can begin signing up for spring sports. Sports offered are baseball, softball, boys volleyball, boys tennis and track and field.

Pick up sign-up forms in the athletic office ASAP.

According to WCSD’s policy, educational trips are limited to seven school days per year. Any days missed for travel beyond the seven days of absence will be illegal days if the student’s age is 16 or younger.

The district prefers all trips be scheduled during the holiday breaks.

The family educational trip request form (available in the school office) must be submitted to the office prior to departure.
