Top seeds advance in EPC playoffs

The East Penn Conference basketball playoffs got underway Friday night despite two of the eight first-round games getting postsponed.

The top seeds advanced in both boys and girls.

The No. 1 Allen boys team beat No. 8 seed Bethlehem Catholic 67-58. The Canaries move on to Monday’s semifinals against either No. 4 East Stroudsburg South or No. 5 Parkland, which play Saturday at 2 p.m.

On the other side of the boys bracket, No. 2 Liberty downed No. 7 Freedom 55-52. The Hurricanes will meet No. 3 Central Catholic in Monday’s semifinal opener at 6 p.m. at the PPL Center. The Vikings beat No. 6 Easton 53-52.

In girls action, top-seeded Bethlehem Catholic beat No. 8 Easton 64-49 to advance to Tuesday’s semifinal game against No. 4 Freedom, which beat No. 5 Northampton 57-50 on Friday.

No. 2 seed Nazareth defeated No. 7 Parkland 43-32 Friday night. The Blue Eagles await the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 3 Stroudsburg and No. 6 Pocono Mountain West. The winner squares off against Nazareth at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the PPL Center with the Beca-Freedom game slated for 7:30 p.m.
