Volunteers have a super time at JCC fundraiser

The Jewish Community Center was bustling with activity Jan. 28 during the annual Super Sunday program.

Chairwomen of the fundraiser were Dana Cohen and Naomi Schachter. They sought out volunteers to make phone calls asking for donations.

In addition to the phone calls, there was a group story time sponsored by the PJ Library.

Jennifer Einstein, who uses crutches to walk, read the book ”The Only One Club” to a group of children.

Karli Jayne Miller, Ms. Wheelchair Pennsylvania 2020, along with Rebecca Axelrod-Cooper also made an appearance on Super Sunday to promote Jewish Disability Awareness and Inclusion Month.

Axelrod-Cooper promoted the documentary which tells the story of the Jersey Hammerheads, a competitive swim team comprised of a diverse group of teens on the autism spectrum.

The documentary, sponsored by the Jewish Family Service of Lehigh Valley, Special Olympics Pennsylvania, and Reel Abilities Film Festival, will be shown 1:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Muhlenberg College.

Members of the Jewish Federation and Jewish Family Service were also gathering food for a Mazel meal to distribute on Super Sunday to seniors in the community who live alone or who do not receive home-cooked meals.

The menu included chicken soup with matzo balls made by Muhlenberg Hillel students, a smoked turkey minestrone soup made by the Jewish Day School, a cabbage casserole made on Super Sunday by volunteers, and an apple crisp made by the “New-ish Jewish” women’s group from the Jewish Federation.

There were also brownies made by the Jewish Day School, a fresh fruit salad made by the Temple Beth El Sisterhood and apples donated by Temple Shirat Shalom and challah donated by Congregation Keneseth Israel.

Giant and Wegmans markets also donated food.

A group of volunteers delivered the Mazel meals later that afternoon to homes in Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton.

Also, small groups visited older Jewish adults, particularly at Cedarbrook Senior Care and Rehabilitation and Phoebe Home.

In the afternoon, volunteers painted the walls of the lower level activity rooms that needed to be upgraded.
