Local theater group performs ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’

Kutztown’s Talisman Players made it easy for play goers to see a perennial favorite right in their backyard.

The family friendly, “Emperor’s New Clothes” scorned the winter snow and opened at the Georgian Room, Kutztown University, the weekend of Jan. 17.

Set in an exotic mythical country in the Far East, the premise of the play is delivered by Zar, played by Liz Weimar, and Zan, portrayed by Megan Laudenslager: “It is easy to make foolish people do what you want them to do.”

With that in mind, the two characters take advantage of the Emperor’s vanity in an amusing and instructive way that easily enchants the audience.

“This is a comedy, adapted in the 1950s by a wonderfully talented writer,” Director Tom Nardone explained. “We are striving to maintain Talisman Players at the highest quality level and we are committed to doing it always on a children’s production,” Nardone said.

Hans Christian Andersen wrote the original story about how two adventurers dupe an entire town.

Afraid of appearing foolish, the townspeople lie about how much they admire the emperor’s new attire, when he is actually parading around in his underwear.

In the famous final scene, it is a child who blurts out the truth when he exclaims, “The Emperor is not wearing anything at all!”
