STUDENT PROFILE - Kenan Kanopka Jr., Freedom HS - Coordinated by Julie Swan
Grade: 12
Family members: My mom is Kim Kanopka. My sister is Brittany Huber. My dad is Kenan Kanopka Sr.
Favorite subject: My favorite subjects revolve around the maths and sciences. In particular, my favorite classes are the Biomedical Science PL TW courses. These courses provide an opportunity in high school that many kids do not get until college. I also enjoy math, especially my Calculus 3 course at Lafayette, because math has rules and there is almost always an answer.
Activities: Currently I am a Boy Scout and have almost attained my rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Boy Scouts. I also participate in the Freedom Ski and Board Club, which is one of my favorite hobbies. On the weekends I work a part time job to earn some money for myself and my future. Through school, I am also a member of National Honor Society, which allows me to participate in community service and give back to the community that raised me.
Next steps: After high school I am going to college. I plan to major in the natural sciences and go to medical school after my four years of college. Once medical school is complete, I plan to enter the field of medicine.
Career goals: I plan on becoming a doctor, but since medicine is so large, I do not know which specialty I would like to practice.
Heroes: My mom has always been a hero to me because she raised my sister first and then myself as a single parent. She has shown me what it is like to be a strong leader and how to make my own path through life.
Hobbies: I enjoy snowboarding with friends in the winter, as well as participating in Boy Scouts adventures year-round. I also enjoy working because it is a friendly climate and a way to become financially independent before I have to.
Current job(s): I work at Walgreens and have been working there for a year.
Volunteer/community work: I enjoy volunteering at Palmer Township’s Miracle League whenever I can. During the summer, I also staff a Cub Scout Day Camp for 40 hours a week, which I have done for three years. Through Boy Scouts, we are constantly doing community service, even during our trip to Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
Likes: I like staying healthy and physically active, as well as mentally healthy. I also enjoy traveling, as I have been to a few other countries, and I enjoy experiencing new things. I like to see what I can’t see here at home every day.
Dislikes: I do not like beets and fish, but every other food is fair game.
Greatest accomplishment (so far): My greatest accomplishment so far would be taking a course at Lafayette. I was one of two students who was offered this opportunity to apply to Lafayette and take one course there for one semester. I am the only Freedom student taking a course there. Taking Calculus 3 at Lafayette gives me a feel for college, especially since I am taking this course with students years ahead of me. Of the 36 students who had the chance to apply, about a third were accepted into this program. Being accepted is a great achievement for me.
Advice for peers: Students must always study and make sure they are prepared. Falling behind is the worst thing possible. If student get all their work done and plan properly, success is possible for anyone.
