Roughie Roundup: Wrestlers aim to win West

Northern Lehigh’s late surge fell short as Catasauqua pulled out a 39-27 Colonial League win in wrestling last Friday. It followed a tough, 40-39 road loss at Palisades last Wednesday for the Rough Riders.

Now, the showdown comes Wednesday night after Press deadlines as the Roughies host Northwestern in what will be for the West Division title and a trip to the Colonial League Wrestling Tournament which is scheduled for Monday, Jan. 27, and will feature the semifinals and finals in the same night. The tourney takes place at Catty.

Against the Bulldogs, Jacob Nye won by forfeit at 106 while Jaryn Hartranft won 9-2 for a 9-0 lead. Gavin Fehr and Cole Brown added to the lead with forfeit wins to make it 21-0 after 126.

Colin Gair fell to the Bulldogs Nathan Ellan 9-2 as NL got on the board to make it 21-3.

After a double forfeit at 145, Trevor Amorim of NL pinned Ben Langsdorf to make it 21-9.

Catty’s Dorian Hoagland pinned his opponent in 1:41 at 160 to make it 27-9 and Dominic Melendez picked up another Catty forfeit win at 170 to make it 33-9. Adam Reinhart made it 39-9 with a 13-second pin at 182.

The Bulldogs finished with a pin at 195, a decision at 220 and another pin at 285 to bring the score to 39-27.

BOYS HOOPS

The Catasauqua boys scored a win over Saucon Valley last week, but it wasn’t easy as they needed double-overtime in the 65-59 final.

It was another lopsided, early run the boys always seem to be a part of this season, but this time it was Catty which got out to a 12-3, first quarter lead. Derek Troxell and Damian DiPaolo each scored four points in the first.

But back came the Panthers with a big second quarter to cut their deficit to 25-20 by halftime. Brian Miller paved the way with 11 points in that frame, including three three-pointers as Saucon made it a game.

Saucon Valley took the lead heading into the fourth quarter, 35-34. This time it was Kyle Patton who heated up and scored 10 points in the frame for SV.

Catty would battle back and eventually tie the game by the end of regulation 46-46. Cole Schiffer and Troxell each scored five in the fourth quarter.

The game was tied again after the first overtime, 56-56, and Troxell scored six points and was helped by Ty Reitz’s four points in the first OT.

Catty finally sealed the game in the second overtime as DiPaolo scored four, Jacob Smith two and Reitz added three.

Troxell finished with 19 to lead Catty while Reitz added 15, Schiffer 14 and DiPaolo had 11.

GIRLS HOOPS

Palmerton got off to a hot start in both the first and second quarters to pull away from Catty for a 58-21 victory.

The Bombers were led by Hollis Guedes seven points in the first as Brianna Moore scored eight in the second. Both girls finished with 12 points on the night to lead the way for PHS.

Kayla Cincilla added eight points and Reagan Nemeth scored seven.

Lexi Rushatz led the way for Catty with 11 points while Bronwyn Pacchioli and Cora Soltis each finished with four points. Kaylee Weidaw added two points. Rushatz finished with two threes on the night.

The Catty girls did pick up a win last week over Saucon 31-14.

The girls pulled away after a close first quarter to outscore the Panthers 13-0 in the second quarter.

Rushatz led all scorers in the game with 15 points, including a three pointer in the win. She shot 4-of-6 from the foul line. Pacchioli added seven points and Olivia Emery scored four. Madison Hicks would add three and Soltis chipped in with two points.
