The Whitehall-Coplay School District announced their latest Hall of Fame class for 2020, which will be honored on January 17.

The event will take place at 6:45pm, just before the varsity boys basketball home game against Pocono Mountain East.

The 2020 class includes Mike Deutsch, Ed Hawrylo, Nick Kurtz, Dennis Laub and Kara Perkoski.

Below is a brief bio on each athlete:

Mike Deutsch, Class of 1985, was a two-sport athlete at Whitehall, excelling in baseball and wrestling. Deutsch played baseball collegiately at Rider College, then spent three seasons in the Baltimore Orioles organization before having a Hall of Fame Blue Mountain League career. Deutsch was Whitehall’s Male Athlete of the Year his senior season.

Ed Hawrylo, Class of 1965, played football, basketball and track and field during his time as a Zephyr. He was an all-conference designee for the Zephs. As an all-star in football he went on to an outstanding career at East Stroudsburg being honored as all-conference there as well. He had a long teaching and coaching career at Catasauqua in baseball, leading the Rough Riders to a PIAA 4th place in 1982.

Nick Kurtz, Class of 2000, was an outstanding two-sport athlete at Whitehall High School. Upon graduation Nick was the all-time leading rusher for single season and career and had the Lehigh Valley record for yards in a game with 429. Kurtz also had an outstanding baseball career, was a two-time EPC All-Star at 2nd base and was Whitehall’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2000.

Dennis Laub, Class of 1984, excelled at all three sports he played at Whitehall. On the football field, he was a member of three championship teams and would later go on to play tight end at Kutztown University. He was a leader on the championship basketball team and would go on to set a school record in the javelin as a member of the track and field team. Laub later coached at Whitehall and Central Catholic.

Kara Perkoski, Class of 2007, was a leader in both soccer and volleyball for the Zephyrs during her career. She graduated from Whitehall as the all-time leading scorer in both goals and points. She was named All-LVIAC All-State. In volleyball she was a three-year starter and won the Zephyr Award in both sports. In 2007, she was named Whitehall’s Female Athlete of the Year. She had an outstanding collegiate career at Rider University.
