Catasauqua’s girls’ basketball team needed a win, especially a character one. Four straight losses could have spun them further down the cycle in the final stage of their season.

Tuesday night at Salisbury, fate shined on the Rough Riders.

After they battled the Falcons throughout the first half, the Roughies had control most of the second half before they hung on for a 39-36 victory.

With the win, the Roughies raised their overall record to 3-10, while Salisbury (0-15) remained winless on the season.

“It was a big win for us,” said Roughies’ head coach Mark Seremula. “We knew they (Salisbury) were struggling, and we couldn’t let up.

“We were down 15-9 early in the game, but they were able to take the lead for the rest of the game. They made it close at the end, but we were able to close it out.

“We were able to fight through it, and that’s huge for us.”

Lexi Rushatz, who had a team-high 14 points, sealed the game with a pair of free throws in the final moments.

“Lexi (Rushatz) has done a nice job for us all season,” said Seremula about his point guard. “She had grown over the year and we’re looking forward to her finishing the season strong.”

Emma Hawk chipped in with 10 career-high points for the Roughies.

“She (Hawk) made a couple of big shots of us,” added Seremula. “She has really been coming on for us and had a great game (against Salisbury).”

Seremula continues to see his club improve.

“We’re definitely getting better, and we’re staying in games longer,” stated Seremula. “We have a number of girls who have stepped up their games.

“Olivia Emery has been playing well all year, and Maddie Hicks has been a solid leader for us. Shaziya Roberts has been a solid second-half player and Bronwyn Pacchioli and Aidan Gerhard have been solid for us.

“It really has been a team effort.”

Seremula is optimistic his club can keep some momentum with games against Saucon Valley Thursday and at Kutztown Monday.

“We feel we can pick up a couple more wins,” said Seremula. “Those are two winnable games for us. We have to keep moving forward.”
