Four Falcons place third at tourney

The Salisbury Falcon wrestling squad may not have great depth, but it does have a great desire to fight.

The feisty spirit was on display last Saturday during the Zephyr Mat Club Invitational, held at Whitehall High School. Every Falcon grappler won at least one match. No less than four of them - John Samy at 126, Braedon Alder at 132, 145-pounder Devon Alder and the 170-pound Ben Krauss - all secured third-place finishes. Braedon Alder and Krauss in particular stood tall, winning three of their four matches. Braedon Alder’s season mark rose to 9-4 and Krauss’ record improved to 8-4.

Another Falcon who soared was Toby Linn, wrestling at 152 pounds. Linn finished fourth in his weight class with 10 points. The hard-charging Linn lost his first match to Palisades Ben Haubert in a fall, but rebounded with two consecutive victories. The first was a fall over Bangor’s Kael Godshalk. Linn then took care of Catasauqua’s Dorian Hoagland in another fall. Linn was pleased with his work and discussed the Hoagland victory.

“I did pretty good, but toward the end I didn’t want to slam him outside of the mat,” Linn, a freshman, said.

When asked why he wrestles, Linn responded that he wanted to please first-year coach Eric Snyder and staff.

“Winning and seeing my coaches smile and be happy,” he said. “I feel a sense of accomplishment.”

Linn could not keep up his winning ways, losing to Whitehall’s Zachary Belblavy in his final match.

The 220-pound Kyle Killiri also also found success in one of his three matches, dumping Palisades’ Riley Campbell in a fall.

Overall Salisbury secured 61.5 points with just six wrestlers at the tournament. The tally was good for eighth place in the eight-team event. Whitehall took first place with 185 points.
